The "Portrait" project for my Intro to Photography Class was by far one of the most demanding. Trying to capture a subject's essence through pictures comes with challenges. A photographer's position comes with great power as they are the one framing the subject. Deciding what the subject will be doing in the picture requires a certain level of understanding between model and photographer. Comfort zones are demolished and re-established to come to a precarious balance of power and vulnerability. My greatest dilemma in creating the pictures for this project was to be able not only to capture a subject but do so while conveying two stories; my perception of the subject and their self-awareness, or lack thereof. To step out of my comfort zone I shot three subjects: a stranger (Environmental Portraits), a close friend (Personal Portraits), and myself (Self Portraits).
